Exploration in the Cuetzalan Area - 1992 After
the Christmas 1991 NCC expedition there were a number of further visits to Cuetzalan in
both the early and the late 1992 caving season. In April and May Ramon and his Mexican
team made three weekend visits. Two of these tied up loose ends in Chichi and Cruz Verdi
and the third made significant progress in Resistol.

"
Jack, Ruthy and myself (Ramon) rigged in while Sergio, Luis and my dad
touristed behind. We went in rather slow due to Ruthy having pain in her hip (3 hours to
end of survey at Bobs Folly). Jack proceeded to rig a traverse with a couple of
bolts to avoid the cascade. Ten metres out we descended to water level, swam a bit and got
into a breakdown chamber. Jack checked out an inlet then we kept going basically straight
forward. Another pitch and we entered a very awkward canyon, with a lot of traversing at
varying heights above the impossibly tight and dangerous cascading water. At one point we
got to a pitch (bypass by dangerous climb) where Jack dropped the bolt driver. Luckily the
pool below was only eye-deep and Ruthy managed, by walking bare foot, to locate it, and
Jack dove and recuperated it. Finally we entered a large breakdown room where several
leads continue downwards. We were attracted by some nice stal over to the left and after a
long passage we found ourselves overlooking the first chamber at Jacks inlet,
bypassing the canyon. Having surveyed on the way in, Jack went back for the tackle while
we rested and then we headed out, derigging as we went. Reached the surface after 13 hours
and were relieved to find the keys to Sergios car."
In November a small group of Brits visited the area with a view to exploring San
Miguel.

"Ramon, Ruthy, Alejandro, Jonathon, Rick & Rhys. After traveling for the best
part of the night we encountered the three British at the Toca Toca and partyed until
4.30am. An expectable early afternoon start found us on the way to San Miguel. The kids
who surrounded us told us of a cave near the school, so we went to see it. Rhys got into
the (literal) shithole and after a few crawlways came out of a different entrance with the
news: not very promising but it could still go. Then the kids decided to show us another
cave to the NE, but before reaching it we decided to skip it as it was getting too late.
At the entrance to San Miguel we toured the impressive cave, setting a few permanent
stations. At the crossroads we split into two teams. While Jonathon, Ruthy and
myself went to derigg back from the present limit, the others surveyed a loop and huge
breakdown slope. After derigging we surveyed an inlet in the first cascade up to a 40m
wide chamber, virgin no footprints, and with beautiful formations, until reaching
the top of a breakdown slope. On the other side the passage, huge, continued, and a river
could be heard. We exited after six and a half hours underground."
